Planpraz or Plan de l'Aiguille: which take-off site should you choose for your paragliding experience in Chamonix?
Planpraz or Plan de l'Aiguille: two take-off sites for your paragliding experience in Chamonix. Find out which one suits your profile best.

First and foremost, we depend on the opening of the ski lifts, which largely guides the choice of flying site.
Planpraz: Chamonix's iconic take-off
Planpraz Brévent is open throughout the winter and summer seasons — from December to April and June to September. It is the main site in Chamonix, offering the most accessible flights for all passengers. Easy to reach, easy take-off, flying face-to-face with Mont Blanc — it has everything. It's the Chamonix highlight.
Depending on the season and the sun, it is preferable to fly in the morning. In winter, you can fly at Planpraz all day long.
It is the valley's main site and an absolute must.
Plan de l'Aiguille: closer to the glaciers.
It is open from December to late October. However, in winter and early spring it is not practical — too snowy and wild. Most of the time during this period, take-off is not possible.
In July and August, flying here is strictly prohibited by ministerial decree, to keep mountain rescue helicopter routes clear.
This site is chosen in April, May and June and is particularly enjoyable in autumn: September, October and early November. During this period it really comes into its own. The air conditions are gentler than in spring and the scenery is breathtaking — the glaciers and autumn colours together are magnificent!
What are the differences between the two sites?
Flight durations are similar at both sites. Planpraz has the advantage in terms of ease of use and take-off. Planpraz is more accessible for everyone. Plan de l'Aiguille is more demanding.
The views are extraordinary at both sites, though the perspective differs. The view over the Mont Blanc massif is more intense from Planpraz. At Plan de l'Aiguille, you fly closest to the glaciers — it feels quite magical.
The most accessible site is Planpraz.
Which site should you choose based on your profile?
If it is your first experience, Planpraz is an excellent option: conditions are gentler and the take-off less daunting. If you are adventurous and want to maximise the sensations and altitude of the flight, go for Plan de l'Aiguille. In any case, your instructor will always adapt to the day's weather conditions to guarantee you the best possible experience.
The final decision belongs to your instructor
It is important to note that the definitive choice of take-off site is always made by your instructor on the day of the flight, based on weather conditions. Safety comes first, and our experienced pilots systematically choose the site offering the best conditions for your flight.
