Paragliding first flight: what is it really like?

Paragliding first flight: what is it really Like?
Where are the flying sites in Chamonix?
In Chamonix, we’re lucky to have ski lifts that take us directly to the take-off sites. We mainly fly from two locations, depending on their opening dates and operating periods:
- Planpraz, at the mid-station of the Brévent ski area
- Plan de l’Aiguille, at the mid-station of the Aiguille du Midi cable car
Taking the gondola up is part of the experience: it allows you to spend time with your instructor and build a relationship of trust. It’s much more enjoyable than driving 20 km on mountain roads!
This is also the perfect moment to share your expectations, fears or wishes so your instructor can tailor the flight to your personality and what you are looking for.
Booking your flight
You can book your tandem flight in several ways:
- via the website: https://www.absolute-chamonix.com

- by SMS: +33 6 08 23 92 65

Whichever method you choose, we will send you written confirmation by email or message on your phone.
You will receive a precise meeting point, time, and practical advice about preparation and equipment.
How does the flight work?
You will meet your instructor at the foot of the ski lifts. Please arrive a little early to purchase your one-way lift ticket. Your instructor will meet you at the agreed meeting point.
You will then take the lift together, which is a great opportunity to get to know each other and prepare for your paragliding experience. This is the right moment to talk about your wishes or any concerns you may have. Your instructor will listen carefully to ensure the flight matches your personality, expectations and comfort level.
Our instructors are empathetic, attentive and reassuring. They understand that a first flight can feel intimidating, and they are there to help you feel confident and relaxed.
At the top station, it’s just a three-minute walk to the take-off area.
Preparation before take-off
At take-off, your instructor will equip you and give you a short briefing to prepare you for launch. Nothing complicated, but we do need your attention and active participation during this phase.
Equipment
You will be fitted with a certified harness and helmet.
If needed, your instructor may recommend gloves and sunglasses, and will prepare the camera if a video option has been arranged.
The paraglider wing will then be laid out and checked carefully before the final safety checks are completed.
Finally, your instructor will attach you securely to the wing and harness system.
Take-off
As you begin the take-off run, you will gradually feel lighter as the paraglider starts carrying your weight. After just a few more steps, you are airborne.
Take-off is naturally the most stressful moment for first-time flyers, but it is much gentler than most people imagine: you do not jump into the void! Running simply gives the wing enough airflow to lift you smoothly and progressively into the air.
Once airborne, you will settle comfortably into your harness and simply enjoy the experience while chatting with your instructor. The flight itself is incredibly smooth and relaxing — often very different from what people expect. Most passengers are surprised by how peaceful and enjoyable it feels.
Landing
We land close to the town centre. Depending on weather conditions and regulations, we use one of Chamonix’s two official landing areas, both located not far from the meeting point.
Flights from Planpraz and Plan de l’Aiguille last around 20 minutes.
The entire activity usually takes between one hour and one hour thirty minutes.
Where can your friends and family watch?
There are two main options:
- accompany you up to the take-off area and enjoy the breathtaking views
- wait for you at the landing field — this is what we usually recommend, as they will get to see just how much you enjoyed your flight!
We can also let them know the colour of the wing so they can spot you easily in the sky.
What should you wear?
Please wear warm and comfortable clothing, even in summer, as temperatures can be cool at altitude.
Sports shoes or hiking shoes are recommended for take-off and landing.
Avoid skirts, dresses or very loose clothing that may interfere with the harness.
Don’t forget sunglasses to protect your eyes during the flight.
